2015: For Freedom’s Sake

In 2014, thanks to my previous work for the municipality, I was approached by the municipality of Eijsden-Margraten to organize a art exhibition with the theme “War and Peace” in the framework of the Liberation Year in 2015. As an organizer and curator, but also as a participant artist, I am proud of the final result, proud that it is possible in this municipality and proud to share this with the spectators!

The exhibition “For Freedom’s Sake” showed a collection of 12 artworks, all of which related to the central theme  “War and Peace.” Additional themes such as loss, pain, death, hope, life, happiness and commemoration were part of this exhibition, where special work of professional artists was exhibited.

The exhibition  took place from 1 to 24 May 2015 in the “Huis van de Burger” in Margraten. In addition to the exhibition, we organized various activities around the theme, such as lectures and films, and we provided an accompanying catalog.

For humanity, art is often a form of expression, as words fail. This exhibition focused on the painful reality of war and violence, combined with creativity and beauty. It has always been one of the tasks of art to imagine that which is too painful or ugly in the human psyche, and even renounce it as a work of art in all its beauty.
